I have a wooden heart.
Slowly carved from the crevice
of the poison oak
twined around the holly and ivy
hawthorne, birch, beech,
brittle aspen and whispering pine--
I am what the earth has made me.

Cut open my flesh and sow the seeds
that drift free of the veins like snow;
each dandelion tuft or seedpod remnant
swishing off with each sweep
of the wind's own broom,
spilling words and stories as they go;
growing as they fall,
dying as they wane.

I have bones comprised of iron.
They stand rigid to attention, militant
against the flaking igneous tissue
and the congealing rocky muscle,
layers of fossilized concepts
drilled in by instructed pushing, pulling
kicking, squirming, screaming--
all to wrest the steel of sinew
into the archer's hand to pull,
commanded only when laziness
of tectonic teeth stop grinding
and the quakes of the dancing body
cease long enough to wake the sleeper.

Stone surrounds the skull;
the precious bird nest of the mind
the aerial roost of ideas,
taking wing through the windows of dark
deciduous lashes--they climb,
high into the sky of conversation
sometimes silent on owlet wings--
or else plummet like lemmings,
dismissed, decaying
abandoned songs they'll never sing.

I have an empty ribcage.
My lungs were lava fields
screaming for attention,
veins pulsing, rushing, bursting--
fury and hatred and passion.
Magma to scald and scold
Ridicule, praise, chant, reply
I howl my message to the sky--
I am the earthen,
And I am not undone.
The need to be strong in a time of misfortune is always there.
We are not a strong species. We are viral.
But we thrive. I'd like to be better than merely diseased.
So here's one try.

This is hauntingly beautiful :)
Thank you so much. <3

That last stanza is unbelievable. It's raw emotion, and really brings out the rest of the poem. The way it picks up speed so fast in fascinating. :)
Wow, I'm so humbled by this, thank you so much.

You're welcome! And congratulations on your DD, you deserved it. :)
